Curating the Evangelical Catholic Tradition

We invite you to join us in Madison Wisconsin for the Seminar's second session in August of 2027 as we consider "Corpus Christi: Reclaiming Real Presence."
The Feast of Corpus Christi - observed the Sunday after the Holy Trinity - is not on the liturgical calendar of the ELCA. The closest we come to liturgical commemoration of the Real Presence is on Maundy Thursday, when the events of the Triddum rightly take center stage as we focus on the Lord’s passion. But should the idea of Christ Jesus “in, with, and under” the elements have a day of its own on the calendar, emphasizing the Sacramental Union as joy-filled mystery of Christ’s presence with the church? With roots in the thirteenth century, Corpus Christi does find resonance in Lutheran theology and is observed in some Lutheran communities. How might our theology support recovery of this day, and what does “real presence” mean for both the church and its witness in a modern age, especially as a response to “virtual” sacraments?
Liturgies will occur at Luther Memorial Church, Madison. Plenary sessions, workshops, and social events will be held at the Fluno Center, five minutes walk away. The Seminar has procured a special rate at the preferred hotel: the Hampton Inn and Suites, Madison, immediately next to the Fluno center.
Plenary speakers, workshop leaders, and musicians will be announced soon. Again, in our efforts to speak seriously to the formation of seminarians and young clergy, discounted tuition will be available. Stay tuned for more information!
